Scouting Report 1.0 — 04.29.2014 (Matthew Quammen)
Left-handed, sweet shooting wing with prototypical NBA size and athleticism. James had a rough time to begin the year, as much of Kentucky’s freshmen did, but showed major flashes late, especially throughout the NCAA tournament. All of the signs are there for his jumper, shooting with a high, quick release. Quite frankly his jumper is a thing of beauty, and extra beauty points since he’s a lefty. As a very young prospect (turning 19 in August), he still has to fill out his slender frame and work on being more consistent.

He has the ability to get to the rim, and finish with authority (ask UConn’s 7-foot center). Displayed a constant motor running the floor and taking on challenges defensively. James will continue to develop his basketball IQ, but he is a world class competitor. Seems like a kid who really wants to be great, and grew by leaps and bounds under Calipari. Between the beautiful jump shot, competitive fire, and swagger under pressure, I’m a believer in James Young. Then again, you never know what the road, the groupies, and the millions will do to an 18-year-old kid.

His floor probably resembles Xavier Henry, showing those flashes of talent but lacking consistent focus. His mid-tier career would place him solidly in the league, as a 3 and D guy. But I see him ending up as a rich man’s Chandler Parsons, hitting from long range, attacking the rim, and competing his ass off. Throw in a little Jalen Rose, tricky off the bounce lefty game, and the 6'6 James could end up being a major steal from where he is currently slated.
