Scouting Report 1.0 — 04.29.2014 (Matthew Quammen)
Tall, long playmaker with limited athleticism. Kyle played the point at UCLA, but it is unclear if an NBA team would feel comfortable with him as a team’s point guard. He certainly plays best with the ball in his hands and possesses great court vision. At 6’9 and weighing 235 pounds, he can see over most defenders and deliver passes that other players simply cannot see or attempt to make. Most likely, he’ll need to learn to play off the ball in the NBA, but with the ability to initiate offense as Andre Igoudala does in certain sets for the Warriors.

Possessing high basketball IQ, he should be able to make the adjustment. He is continuing to improve as a jump shooter, and has an ability like Paul Pierce to get to the rim, despite lacking supreme athleticism. The major concerns about his game come on the other end, where he simply cannot defend. Some players his size boast the ability to defend the 1-4; Kyle on the other hand was hidden on the worst opponent playing the 1-4. Uses his length to rebound, but does not yet have the physique to hold up at the next level and will need to grow into his frame.

I see his best case scenario as a Hedo Turkoglu in Orlando type, playing the wing but handling the ball and making lots of plays in the pick and roll (for those of you that can handle a cross-racial player comparison). If his body develops further, a modest comparison would be Boris Diaw, rebounding and moving the ball on offense. His floor is something comparable to Marko Jaric, playing much of his career in European leagues.
