Scouting Report 1.0 — 05.28.2014 (Joseph Fafinski)
Upon being dismissed from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last year, shooting guard P.J. Hairston took his talents to the Texas Legends of the D-League. It was in Frisco he averaged nearly 22 points per game throughout the 2014 assignment. Hairston is a project of sorts, but it’s utterly conceivable to believe he has the most experience out of any draft hopeful. This is due to the fact that he wore a professional uniform during the 2013-14 season. After a regrettable year, Hairston shifts his back to the draft pool. His strengths lie within the confines of his statistics.

He's a superb scorer, he’s strong on both sides of the hardwood, and he’s not afraid to take it to the hole on anybody at any time. Additionally, his spot up jumper is one of the best in the class. Hairston isn’t really missing much in his offensive arsenal with the exception of creating offense for others. The 6’6 minor leaguer isn’t a great distributor and often makes impetuous decisions when running the floor. Defensively he has potential due to his freakishly long arms (he sports nearly a 6’10 wingspan) and his ability to move well laterally is sound.

Since he committed a number of team violations last year at UNC, character has to be another knock on Hairston’s draft stock that remains colossal in size. Coaches and GMs will ultimately be the ones to decide if he’s truly a changed man or not. If we’re comparing him to an active player, I’ll go with Ben Gordon. They can both drop buckets in flashes and scare opponents with their offensive attack. He may have a lot going against him in the draft process but one thing cannot be denied, and that is the fact that P.J. Hairston is as battled tested as anyone else.
